Restaurant Review
Whites of Wexford has been an institution in Wexford Town for years. In addition to the 4-star hotel and leisure complex, they have three different dining options. Opening onto the street is the La Speranza bar and café, serving casual food throughout the day and evening. There is also the Library Bar, with it’s big, comfy armchairs that has a lunchtime carvery and serves food up until 9pm. The main restaurant however is The Terrace. Our own Mary Meaney recently spent a weekend there with her five sisters and mother. Heaven only knows whether the hotel is still standing, but here is her review.
I recently spent a weekend with my Mum and five of my sisters at Whites Hotel, Wexford town. We arrived on Friday afternoon and had booked The Terrace Restaurant in the hotel for dinner that night. The Restaurant is on different levels and partitions soften the appearance of a large room, as it overlooks the courtyard area outside.
The starters made a table of hungry women very happy - we had the advantage that with six of us at the table we could taste most of the menu between those who were willing to share. I had the Wild Game Terrine and it was so good I called the hotel after the weekend to ask for the recipe! Other options included a wonderful tartlet of peppers, brie and olives: smoked chicken Caesar Salad, whitebait and the most superb salmon rillettes.
The mains allowed us to continue on our food swapping experience. My panache of salmon, prawns and seabass was in such demand I was glad Therese had ordered it as well - otherwise I may not have had much to eat. Other delights included fillet of pork, roasted goats cheese, Coq au Vin, grilled sirloin steak, confit of duck leg and pan fried sea trout. All our main courses were served with local seasonal vegetables and potatoes.
For those of our group still up to the challenge we had a selection of desserts to share and a locally sourced cheese board.
Service in the Terrace Restaurant is professional and attentive and it added greatly to our enjoyment of the evening. They say food is as good as the company in which it is eaten, in this case without doubt I had the best of both worlds, the very best of company and the very best of local, seasonal produce cooked and served to perfection!
